Ah, I love the end of year ‘best of’ lists! All of the most amazing tracks and albums distilled and neatly packaged up. So good! While a lot of them might not be all that surprising, the best part is seeing all of the amazing stuff that you’ve missed throughout the course of the year. Like this little gem, how did this escape my attention? It’s totally freaking sweet, as is the album. Who knows what else I’ve missed. I don’t like thinking about it.
Shields by Grizzly Bear is one of my favourite albums from 2012. It’s mature and sophisticated. It has depth and texture. It’s moody and dramatic. I think throughout it’s incredibly well crafted. Below is Half Gate. Perhaps not the best, but one of the excellent, lesser known tracks from the album. Every part of it feels purposeful. The drums, the harmonies. Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful.
‘Villes éteintes’ (Darkened Cities), Thierry Cohen’s vision of major world cities with the lights cut out. He superimposes onto the darkened city-scapes stunning night skies, which were photographed at similar lattitude in unpopulated areas. Beautiful no? http://thierrycohen.com/pages/work/starlights.html
Great track. Big 80s beats and airy vocals. Chromatics, smoothed over. And yes, there is the video. wow.
